Five Ways To Help Baby Sleep Through The Night

Five Ways To Help Baby Sleep Through The Night

1. Use light correctly. Babies are still figuring out the difference between night and day. Light is the biological signal they use to make this important distinction. So during the day, keep baby in the light, but when the day winds down, and it becomes night time, you need to slowly dim the lights to help trigger the release of melatonin to get baby ready for sleep. So keep in mind how you light your house at night, to help baby learn when it’s time to sleep and when it’s time to be awake and learn and play.
2. Stay on a routine. This is pretty difficult for new parents since we are just adjusting to our new lives. However, keeping baby on a routine schedule can help make sure they fall asleep easily at the same time every night. So set a good routine and stick to it and you’ll help train baby’s body to get on a good sleep cycle. A good routine will also help you get the sleep you need.
3. Only put your baby to bed when they are sleepy. Like using light and sticking to a routine, this can help baby understand that the bed is for sleeping. If you only put them in bed when they are drowsy, they will only associate bed with the process of falling asleep. Make sure that bed is only used for sleeping and not for playtime or other awake activities.
4. Wean your baby off their pacifier. Pacifiers are a great comfort when baby is very young, however pacifiers can be really disruptive to the sleep cycle. When baby falls asleep with a pacifier in their mouths, if they lose that pacifier it may wake them up before they are done sleeping. So leading up to 8 months of age, try to start weaning your baby off the pacifier so they can get a more restful nights sleep.
5. Play white noise sounds. Babies, especially newborns are used to white noise when they sleep because of the sounds inside the womb. Playing white noise can help mimic these sounds and make baby feel more comfortable. There are some really great sleep machines and smartphone apps on the market nowadays that mimic the natural sounds of the womb. So if baby is having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep you might want to try incorporating one of these devices into their sleep cycle.
The five ways require a little bit of discipline, but if you follow these tips baby will fall asleep faster and stay asleep through the night, giving you the relief you need to get a good night’s sleep.
